Ideas

Post by Ceta » Mon May 27, 2013 12:21 pm

I kinda want to get back into the practice of writing via short stories but, since it's been quite a while since the last time I wrote anything, I don't really have any good ideas for themes. While I do plan to look around on Google for stuff, I was wondering if you guys have any good resources/websites that I should take a look at. You don't need to provide any ideas/themes on your own, but those are also welcome if you feel inclined post some.

A massive source for themes is what's right there in front of you. Look around with a different eye.

Ceta,

I'm not that familiar with Japanese culture, but in The Netherlands, most successful (comic) artists are the ones that draw for newspapers. They take one of the main stories of that day (or yesterday) and turn that into a comic. So actually the news is their inspiration. And there is news everyday.

If you are looking for short stories, the competition Elfwood - http://www.elfwood.com/libr/library.html and DeviantArt http://www.deviantart.com/literature/ have some great stuff.

Also, my brain can thing of a thousand things to draw, including stories.

haha...True, however, using things from my daily life is something I want to avoid.

ahaha...Finding things to draw isn't much of a problem; I draw random stuff all the time. The problem I'm facing is what to write about. I want to do a few short projects to get me back into the swing of things but I want to avoid using stuff that other people have written because of the possibility it might bring about unexpected problems later on. (I realize I'm probably over-thinking things but, due to a few bad experiences when I started getting into the online art scene, I can't help but worry.)

But, regardless, thanks for the links. I'll look through those and see if there's anything that can give my imagination a kickstart.

This isn't a website with ideas, but it's a website that at least has some very good pointers and tips about writing in general.
http://www.superheronation.com/
(It doesn't just apply to superhero stories)
It has some cool things like: How to Beat Writer's Block, or How to Develop Great Characters, or Don't Get Rejected on Page 1.
I think it's a really good site, and I use it often. :D

Thanks for the link, Zephio. I'll definitely give it a read and see what I can get out of it. ^_^

Projects are on hold for a bit. I need to buckle down and study for an examination coming up on the first of December. Once that's out of the way, I'll be trying to get back on track with everything that I've been putting on hold for the longest time.

haha...I wish it were, but I'm aiming for the highest level so, if I'm going to pass it, I need to spend whatever free time I have studying. (With the occasional break to visit MWS and make sure everything is all right, of course.)

Haha you sound like a slice of life anime, foreigner in japan busy with his job, but studying in every free moment to reach the top! Little does he know his life will change forever, when a mysterious woman moves in next to him.

I SAID DIFFERENT EYE! Point being that you don't look at what's there. Well you do look what's there. How to explain this without philosophy or oneliners..

Here, my keyboard at work. If there's anything i don't wanna use ever, it's this stupid keyboard. But look at it, those little dirty cubes on a platter, could be a sattelite image of a big line of warehouses, each with a different label, who knows what's in there? Or it's like the little letters are being held in check by bigger keys around them, like some riot, while the numbers sit there on the side doing nothing. Look how those symbols are arranged, like it's a certain hierarchy. The letters are all mixed up but the surrounding keys are in strict ranks. Also kinda looks like the top of a big space cruiser, the arrows are the bridge. Look how the dirt falls between the keys to the floor, like the keys are buildings with clean top floors and the trash gets thrown to the dirty lower levels. That's both the setting of binary domain and fifth element right there. Also note how the big upper levels are held up by structures below, probably maintained by people on the lowest levels. That's what i see in this keyboard.

Now apply this to everything.

haha...You make it sound special when it really isn't. There are so many different kinds of tests here and many people studying for them, not just students or foreigners. Most people I encounter (a few of my friends included) are studying for English tests like TOEIC and Eiken, but there are also many different types of licensing tests available depending on what you need for work/to put on your resume/to get a pay raise/etc.

Thanks. I'll be sure to keep that in mind when I have the chance to start writing again. Although, it's getting a little harder to figure out when that will be. I just found out that there's another test that I need to prepare for (thankfully, it's not until next year). My friend, who took the test already, told me that there are three sections: Japanese, English and Math. Wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the math part. As a result, I need to get hold of those study books and brush up on my math. (Probably should brush up on my English, too, while I'm at it.)

haha...I'd like to write something that I wouldn't mind showing family and friends. Besides, I think I'd fail pretty badly when it comes to writing porn since it's hard to write about something when you don't read anything from the genre.
