The Project! Homage to your favorite series! READ 1st PAGE

Post by Dustin C. » Mon Apr 16, 2007 2:21 am

This week:
EVANGELION WEEK! (well 2 weeks really)
we can start friday, june 8 ending on june 28.

yo everyone!
got a cool idea for something to do!
i was reading along the internets when i found this!
http://www.japanator.com.nyud.net:8090/ ... gon-ball-z
and it was really cool! so i wanted to do it too!
http://mangaworkshop.net/show.pl?imageid=24625
yeah its bad, but i did it on a "spur of the moment" kinda thing...

but i think it would be a really interesting project for everyone here to do some sort of tribute piece or something!
everyone would basically do an homage of a popular series like once every 2 weeks or so. what do you guys think, sound like a good idea?

:D

RULES:

1. ok! first we'll choose a series that everyone can agree on.
heres a few to choose from:
Bleach - Naruto - One Piece - Eyeshield 21 - Love Hina - FLCL - Pokemon
Card Captor Sakura - Chobits - Cowboy Beebop - Gundam - Tecnhi Muto
Great Teacher Onizuka - Initial D - MBQ - Evangelion - Death Note
Lupin III - Shaman King - Battle Royale - Hellsing - Trigun - Robotech
samurai champloo - ghost in the shell - kenshin - more suggestions.
now these are just suggestions, these are just some of the most popular ones i could think of. but dont feel obligated to just these, if you have a suggestion for a series that everyone knows and is a good series, then by all means tell us!

2. what to draw. here is where you can be creative!
1.) a single character, with an illustrated background.
2.) multiple characters, with an illustrated background.
3.) a collage with 3 or more characters, and a color background
(must be more than 3 but you could draw 100 too. for the color, just do a fade, pattern whatever, just no drawn images except charactrers.)

3. Art stuff!
No old fanarts please! you must make a new and original picture based on these guidelines.
Media to use: anything! digital, ink and paper, poop and cheese!....wait...
pics have to be FULL COLOR illustrations, no exceptions.

4. Time
you got 2-3 weeks!

any questions?

If everyone here were a well-known professional artist giving homage a series that greatly influenced them and their art style, then yeah, it'd be a great idea. However, for a group of people on a message board, it's a different story.

Since the range of time that most people have been drawing is quite varied, for beginning artists this probably wouldn't hold the same effect as someone who has been drawing for a long time. For me, I think it'd be fun to revisit the comic series that got me interested in manga or the TV shows that got me interested in anime.

For a beginning artist, on the other hand, it'd most likely be like doing another piece of fanart. Nothing special. While it'd be fun to work on, it just wouldn't have the same meaning.

I think it's worth a try, regardless, so long as you set the guidelines of the project and maintain the thread well. By that, I mean getting people interested in participating and keeping the thread from dying off. Also, since it seems many people here don't like DBZ, you should probably keep that out of the thread title, guidelines and any examples you wish to give.

Another idea would be to have a poll to let people choose a series to do an homage to. That way, people can interact with the thread and choose what they want to work on next by vote count. I'll leave the decision-making up to you, however, should you decide to give this project a try.

you do know that manga workshop is more than just a forum, right?

F&%$ them! :D

anyways, yeah there would be guidelines and all, of course.
i just thought it would be a really cool project, cause i was inspired and stuff.
and besides, tell me that the Piccolo by Kubo Taito doesnt look badass.

also, its open to everyone who wants to participate~!
once we get a few more people to say "yes" then i'll do the rules and stuff.

again...
everyone would basically do an homage of a popular series like once every 2 weeks or so
so no, its not just DBZ.
in fact, the first thing to do will decide what series to do!
obviously a tasteful, widely-known series would be good.

example: Deathnote, One Piece, Eyeshield, FMA, etc. etc.
The whole DBZ thing was just inspiration for this idea. ^_^

rules...i'll do them later tonight.
one thing though, a new work must be submitted.
sorry rabid, you have to start work on it again!

I'm fully aware of the front section of MWS. I've already submitted art there. However, since this thread is on the message board, I tailored my reply specifically for the message board. If you wish to include the front section for the submissions, then you should include instructions for everyone in the guidelines when they post the pics up front. If you don't, I'm pretty sure that people viewing the art section on the front page will think that it's just more fanart if the artist forgets to mention the project in their picture's description. By giving specific posting instructions for the front section of MWS (like putting a message about the topic or a link to the board topic in the description or something), however, you'll be guaranteed much more success with the project.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of DBZ (I root for Vegeta). However, because it seems a majority of people don't like DBZ, I think that the project won't get as much participation if you make it sound like you're trying to get everyone to draw their own versions of DBZ.

If you make more of the discussion about how it inspired you to start up the project and focus more on the project being up to the artist to display what series got them started or was a huge influence in their development as an artist, then I think that people will be more open-minded to the project. As it stands, there's too much DBZ influence in the intro for all the DBZ-haters to really appreciate the project idea.

If you want the project to have better success, you're going to just have to bite your lip and let the DBZ stuff take a back seat so that you can appease the masses. While I know it's a pain, sacrifices must be made if it's for the greater good.

well, since DBZ has been done by the manga-ka guys, and apparently 2 people hate it with an utterly deep and malevolent passion, we wont be doing DBZ at all.

but since we have a lot of people, we can start!
i'll put up the guidelines a little bit later today. ^_^
